Katy Jordan’s journey from a small-town upbringing in Stirling, Scotland, to becoming a multi-award-winning filmmaker based in Glasgow is nothing short of inspiring. With a background in graphic design and an unrelenting passion for storytelling, Katy has carved a unique path in the independent film industry, blending her artistic talents with her determination to push boundaries and redefine her craft.
An Artistic Foundation
Before stepping into filmmaking, Katy studied Graphic Design & Visual Communication in Falkirk. This early focus on visual arts laid the groundwork for her career, equipping her with the skills to design all the artwork for her productions. From posters to promotional materials, Katy’s personal touch is evident in every project, creating cohesive and compelling visual identities for her films.
Stepping Into Acting and Writing
In 2013, Katy’s creative aspirations led her to acting. After a year of studying at an acting school, she ventured out on her own, landing her first role as Gemma in the short film Just Gemma. This experience sparked a deeper interest in storytelling, motivating Katy to write her first script, Girl Talk, the following year. While the film is no longer available online, the story’s potential has evolved into a reimagined script titled Ladies Night, slated for production in the coming months.
The Breakthrough: Boundless
Katy’s most significant achievement to date is Boundless, a six-part murder mystery series that she wrote in 2014 and filmed over the course of 2015. The production was a labor of love, funded entirely out of Katy’s pocket and completed during her annual leave from her day job. Despite the challenges, Boundless emerged as a multi-award-winning series, premiering in 2019 in the heart of Glasgow, where the story is set. It now streams on the indie platform OpprimeTV, showcasing Katy’s ability to create captivating narratives on a limited budget.
The Birth of BlueCloth Productions
During the making of Boundless, Katy met her production partner, Andy. Together, they founded BlueCloth Productions, a company dedicated to producing high-quality independent films. Under this banner, the duo has created four award-winning shorts: Retail Therapy, Hidden Scars, The Weekend, and Hallowed Be Thy Name. These projects highlight the versatility and depth of BlueCloth’s storytelling capabilities, cementing its reputation in the indie film scene.
Recognized for Writing Excellence
In addition to her achievements as a producer and filmmaker, Katy has earned global recognition for her writing. Her scripts for the short film Me, Myself & I and the feature-length project Regalia have won numerous awards, demonstrating her skill in crafting stories that resonate with audiences. These accolades underscore Katy’s talent and her ability to create narratives that transcend cultural and geographic boundaries.
A New Challenge: Directorial Debut
Katy is now preparing to take on a new role—director. Her upcoming short film will mark her directorial debut, a milestone that fills her with both excitement and nerves. This project represents another step in Katy’s evolution as a filmmaker, pushing her to explore new facets of the creative process and solidify her vision behind the camera.
Author and Visual Storyteller
Beyond filmmaking, Katy is also an accomplished author. Her spy and gangster book series, Colour Coded, is available in online bookstores, with trailers for each book produced and edited by Katy herself. This venture further showcases her multifaceted talents and commitment to storytelling across different mediums.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Growth
As an individual with autism, Katy has faced unique challenges throughout her career. Learning on the job and stepping outside her comfort zone have been integral to her growth. Whether mastering editing techniques, experimenting with visual effects, or tackling acting challenges, Katy’s dedication to self-improvement and resilience has been a cornerstone of her success.
Looking Ahead
Katy’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and self-belief. With a production company, a directorial debut on the horizon, and a portfolio of award-winning projects, Katy is poised to continue making waves in the independent film industry. Her story is a source of inspiration for aspiring filmmakers and creatives, proving that with passion and determination, anything is possible.
