Aly Rose, an accomplished choreographer and dance filmmaker, has made significant contributions to the world of dance in China. As the head of the Dance Program at New York University Shanghai (NYUSH), Rose brings her expertise in Choreography & Performance, Composition, and Dance for Camera to aspiring dancers in one of the world’s most vibrant cities. Prior to her role at NYUSH, she played a crucial role in establishing the Dance Minor at the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.
Rose’s creative work has been showcased at renowned venues across China, including the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall, the Power Station of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art MoCA, the Power Long Museum, and the Glass Museum. Her artistic vision extends beyond traditional dance performances, as she collaborates with diverse populations and non-dancers to create unique films that focus on the beauty and expression of the human body.
Recognized for her exceptional talent, Rose’s screendances have garnered awards and acclaim from prestigious festivals such as the San Francisco Dance Film Festival, Dance Camera West, and the Osaka International Film Festival. To further her passion for dance films, she played a pivotal role in the establishment of Coreocinema, the world’s first streaming platform dedicated exclusively to dance films, in partnership with the National Art Network and the Mexico City Videodance Festival.
Beyond her artistic accomplishments, Aly Rose is actively involved in various organizations and initiatives that promote cultural exchange and leadership development. She is an American Mandarin Society fellow, an Asia 21 Young Leader of the Asia Society, and a lecturer for the United Nations Leadership Programme. Additionally, she is a distinguished member of the National Committee of US-China Relations (NCUSCR), contributing to the enhancement of mutual understanding and collaboration between the two countries.
Rose’s impressive resume also boasts a unique distinction in China’s history. She is the first and only Westerner to have graduated from the renowned Beijing Dance Academy, further solidifying her commitment to bridging cultural gaps and promoting artistic exchange.
Her choreographed works have graced grand stages and events worldwide, leaving a lasting impact on audiences. Notable performances include the Opening of the Temple of Light in Chile 2016, the Closing of the Shanghai Expo 2010, the Opening of the Beijing Olympics 2008, the Times Square New Year’s Ball Drop 2014, the 798 Dashanzi International Art Festival, and various showcases in the United Arab Emirates, such as Al Ain and Abu Dhabi.
Currently, Aly Rose is passionately engaged in a groundbreaking project at NYUSH, collaborating with a creative team to bring the ONE Show to life. This ambitious endeavor involves pioneering the use of 3D gaming software Unity to choreograph an aerial finale featuring an impressive ensemble of 100 aerialists. By pushing the boundaries of technology and dance, Rose continues to inspire and redefine the possibilities within the field.
